Submerged River Archaeological Heritage

Lecturer:
Annie DUMONT, Research Engineer, River Archaeologist, Department of Subaquatic and Underwater Archaeological Research (DRASSM)

► Submerged River Archaeological Heritage.

‘Watercourses preserve in their active beds vestiges that bear witness to the development and exploitation of rivers by past societies.
Partly destroyed by the large-scale work carried out on hydrosystems since the 19th century (dredging to extract materials, construction of dams, development of commercial shipping and tourism, etc.), this heritage is now threatened with extinction because of the dual impact of man and climate.
This webinar will present a number of examples of recently discovered submerged sites, notably in the Loire and Doubs rivers. These remains are often made of wood, which freshwater can preserve for hundreds of years, sometimes making it possible to date them precisely. The remains of bridges, shipwrecks, fisheries, mills and dykes bear witness to man's actions over the last two millennia to exploit these natural areas and live there despite the constraints.

Annie Dumont is a research engineer at the French Ministry of Culture, assigned to the Department of Underwater and Subaquatic Archaeological Research (DRASSM), a national department of the General Directorate of Heritage. She specialises in river archaeology, appraising archaeological remains discovered in rivers, writing expert opinions for regional archaeological services and territorial archaeological research commissions (CTRA), and directing research programmes on various rivers.
