Description 

The issue of river management is a major societal challenge in the era of climate change and ongoing territorial transformations. Massive and accelerated urbanization exerts strong pressures on the resources provided by rivers and their surrounding environments, particularly in alluvial settings. These pressures have cascading effects that raise questions about the resilience of societies.


Objectives

Explore current dynamics, their socio-environmental impacts, and propose solutions to prevent damage and build resilient and sustainable cities.

Learning objectives

By the end of this e-learning course, you should be able to: 
  1. Understanding what a river system is and how urbanization transforms it.
  2. Identifying the impacts of urbanisation on the physico-chemical and ecological quality of water resources, and explore solutions to ensure the fulfilment of vital needs.
  3. Understanding how interactions between cities and surface waters generate health risks, and identify solutions to reduce these vulnerabilities
  4. Analyzing flood risks in urban areas and the impacts of sediment extraction, and understand the measures available to address them.
  5. Exploring how urban rivers can become a driver of quality of life, through ecological, legal, socio-cultural, and political dimensions.

E-learning Programme in details

Week #1 - Laying the foundations
Describing a watercourse according to its hydrological, geomorphological, ecological, and chemical dimensions, identifying the resources, uses, and benefits of river corridors, defining urbanization and assess the pressures it exerts on the river system.

Week #2 - Impacts on water quality and primary needs
Understanding the role of urban discharges and emerging pollutants in river degradation and their impacts on vital needs, understanding the impact of urbanization on the hydrological regime and ecological quality of watercourses and its consequences, identifying integrated management approaches and innovative solutions to preserve river quality.

Week #3 - Impacts on health issues 
Understanding the diversity of water-related health risks across urban contexts and the dynamics that produce them, particularly in the Global South, identifying levers for action to reduce these vulnerabilities, understanding the concept of ecosystem services and its application in nature-based solutions.

Week #4 - Vulnerability to flooding and sediment extraction 
Identifying flooding mechanisms in urban areas and their consequences for residents, infrastructure, and structures, knowing the emergency response measures and preventive urban planning provisions for flood events, understanding the ecological and structural consequences of sediment extraction from watercourses.

Week #5 - Rivers _ an opportunity for sustainable cities
Understanding why healthy rivers represent an opportunity for the urban living environment and the socio-environmental justice challenges posed by climate change, understanding how law and a new culture around rivers can promote a greater place for rivers in cities, enabling them to fulfil their full role, analyzing the challenges of urban governance in reconciling the interests of ecosystems and city dwellers.
