Prerequisites
Standard Physics / Chemistry Bachelor: Mathematics, thermodynamics, chemistry
Goals
The purpose is to acquire knowledge of the physics of water at the microscopic scale (molecules and molecular interactions), of the thermodynamics of pure water and some common solutions (CO2, NaCl…) and of the isotopes of water. The basic science will be applicated to Earth science.
The students should acquire a good knowledge of the thermodynamics of water and apply it in other teachings. They should be able to use the official equation of state of water.

- The water molecule, anomalies, phase diagram, stable and metastable phases
- Equation of State of pure water
- Common potentials for molecular dynamics simulations.
- Capillarity and wetting.
- Mixtures: Solubility, supersaturation, dissolution of CO2 and induced chemistry. Influence of salt on the thermodynamic and dynamic characteristics of water.
- Isotopic fractionation of water.
