Ecohydrology Open Online Courses: learning an approach connecting people, ecosystems and water

By working with nature, ecohydrology can improve water management and help with the restoration of threatened ecosystems from molecular to basin scale. To strengthen the understanding of the ecohydrological approach among individuals and institutions alike, and to promote its implementation, the Intergovernmental Hydrological Programme (IHP) of UNESCO launched on 5 November 2020 self-enrolment Ecohydrology Open Online Courses. They are designed for university students, environmental scientists, practitioners, professionals working at decision-making institutions, and teachers.

The courses are grouped in an introduction and in three modules:
· Introduction - Presentation of the UNESCO Ecohydrology programme

Module 1: Fundamentals of Ecohydrology (4 lectures) 1. Ecohydrology in the Anthropocene - necessity to change paradigm from mechanistic to evolutionary/ecosystemic (Maciej Zalewski) 2. Ecohydrology and methodology of science - linking deductive and inductive approach (Maciej Zalewski) 3. Aquatic ecosystem dynamics (Luis Chicharo) 4. Ecosystems hydrology (Michael McClain)

Module 2: Application of Ecohydrology (4 lectures) 1. Urban ecohydrology topics (Pascal Breil) 2. Coastal ecohydrology topics (Luis Chicharo) 3. Environmental flow science (Michael McClain) 4. Microbes/bacteria in aquatic ecosystems (Stefano Fazi)

Module 3: Transdisciplinary Topics for Ecohydrology (3 lectures) 1. Traditional Ecological Knowledge (Joana Freitas) 2. Groundwater and Ecosystems (Case Study) (Monica D'Elia) 3. Ecohydrology for Water Management in Semi Arid system of Brazil (Francisco José de Paula Filho).
