GHG Emissions from Large Dams: from the Fundamental to the Applied

Yves Prairie, Professor, Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM). Yves is hosted at the LEHNA laboratory from October 2023 to April 2024 with a H2O'Lyon co-funding.
"Almost all continental aquatic ecosystems are net sources of greenhouse gases (GHGs) to the atmosphere. However, unlike natural lakes, CO2 and CH4 emissions from large (and small) dams must be considered as anthropogenic, i.e. as additional sources. Moreover, the IPCC now requires signatory countries to include these emissions in their annual national GHG inventories. In this webinar, I will look at the quantification of the main flows and their geographical distribution across the globe. I will then look at the modelling of these emissions, their past, present and future importance on a global scale, and their influence on the climate (radiative forcing). Finally, I will address the question of what can be done to reduce the carbon footprint of existing reservoirs at different planning stages."
Yves Prairie is a professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM). He has held the UNESCO Chair in Global Environmental Change since 2011, and his research focuses on various aspects of the biogeochemical carbon cycle in freshwater aquatic ecosystems. He is a founding member of the GRIL research centre, a research consortium of all Quebec universities working in lake and river ecology, of which he was director for 9 years. He was also President of the International Society of Limnology from 2013 to 2019.
