World Water Day 2021

On The March 22, 2021

H2O'Lyon will celebrate the World Water Day 2021 by organizing seminars and meetings on the theme of this year : #Water2me.

► MICROPOLLUTANTS IN WATER: FROM THE TREATMENT PLANT TO THE TAP

On the occasion of World Water Day 2021, H2O'Lyon is pleased to invite Dr Nathalie CHEVRE, researcher and professor at the University of Lausanne. Her research focuses on the risk of mixtures of chemical substances on the environment.

"Chemical substances, also known as micropollutants, are ubiquitous in the environment. This is particularly true in the aquatic environment where pesticides, drugs, cosmetics, etc. are detected. These substances are used in our daily activities and are evacuated with the waste water to the sewage treatment plants. However, these treatment plants are not designed to eliminate them. They therefore end up in surface water. In this webinar, we will illustrate how micropollutants enter the urban water cycle, from our sink pipe to our drinking water tap. This is based on the example of medicines and Lake Geneva, a source of drinking water for 1 million inhabitants between Switzerland and France. We will also discuss open questions about the risk that these substances pose to the environment and to health."

► MICROPOLLUTANTS IN WATER: FROM THE TREATMENT PLANT TO THE TAP

Water is probably the most precious resource on earth. It provides us with food, hygiene, health, entertainment, energy and goods, and hosts an incredible biodiversity.
How important is water in our lives, cultural practices, economy and environment? How do we define the value of water? Does a better understanding of the value of water help to preserve it?
To talk about it, three researchers from the H2O'Lyon community share their points of view as economists, lawyers and geographers.
With :

  • Emeline Comby (University of Lyon 2), geographer, studies the landscape impacts of public policies, particularly energy. She also studies how waterscapes are shaped by capitalism in Europe and North America. She co-directed with Matthieu Adam in 2020 Le Capital dans la Cité where she develops reflections on the reconquest of urban water fronts.
  • Gaetan Bailly (University of Lyon 3), lawyer, is interested in environmental law and more particularly in the traditional uses of water under the test of law. He has expertise in French and European law and is currently putting his work in perspective with uses and standards in Mexico.
  • Philippe Polomé (University of Lyon 2), economist, works on environmental economics and more specifically on the evaluation of public policies and environmental risks. He is dean of the Faculty of Economics and Management of the University of Lyon 2 and coordinator of the master Risks and Environment.
